Lord Deliver-Us
A personal history of Sir Charles Locock, Bt, Queen Victoria's favourite physician and celebrated accoucheur by Charlie Lush
Famously dubbed 'The Great Deliverer of His Country' by Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, Sir Charles Locock not only successfully delivered all 9 of their children but also some of their grandchildren. He also attended the Empress Eugenie and soon established the largest obstetrics practice in London.
It has also been alleged by his family that he helped the Queen out of a tight spot by secretly delivering the illegitimate son of her fourth daughter, Princess Louse, after which arrangements were made to have the boy raised by one of Locock's sons. In order to validate this story, permission was sought to extract a DNA sample from the boy's remains...
Casting Lines by Charlie Lush
An amusing collection of letters exchanged between 3 enthusiastic fishermen airing their thoughts on many diverse topics such as catching pike with a kipper, shooting guinea fowl in 'happy, happy Africa,' the turbulent state of the economy and the modern condition of womanhood. A light but entertaining read with 4 illustrations by the editor.
Like Father Like Son
The biographies of Lord Justice Robert Lush and his son Sir Charles Montague by Charlie Lush
Sir Robert Lush was one of the most learned and respected judges of the Victorian era. Whilst still a student, he was advising senior judges on points of law and published a significant book commonly known as 'Lush's Practice' and still referred to today. He helped revise the Criminal Code Bill and frame the rules of the Judicature Act becoming one of the first Lord Justices of Appeal. Moreover, he and his wife, Elizabeth, were respected philanthropists doing much to alleviate the suffering of the poor in mid-19th century London.
Three of Robert's sons followed their father's profession, the youngest and most notable of whom was Sir Charles Montague. 'Montie' was also called to the bench in 1910 but, unlike his father, made more of a name for himself as one of the leading barristers of the day participating in many causes celebres. Like his parents, he also followed in their philanthropic footsteps sometimes only charging a nominal fee if he felt his clients had been hard done by but had little money. He was also associated with the Boys' Brigade. His wife, 'Maggie,', was one of the granddaughters of Sir Charles Locock, Bt hence the connection between the two families.
